| Statement
I am inspired by views and reactions to places and spaces from both
imaginary and actual experience; such as a sunset or a street fight,
a gift or sometimes as simple as a glance from a stranger. These
works are spontaneous reactions to memories and feelings from recall
and/or a dream state. My images are mapped with marks, lines and
color, both expressive and linear. Color and line are essential
in the communication of my work. Often I will use various colors
on a continued theme until I feel I have addressed the subject or
form properly. Most importantly, many of my images are meant to
be seen as collective groupings; a calendar series I call it. I
purposely group many pieces together for visual impact and to express
my endless thought stream.
Biography
Julie Malone was born in Kansas City in 1971. She received a BFA
in Studio Art/Painting from Central Missouri State University in
1995 and moved to St. Louis in 1996. She began her career as a digital
designer working within the decorative, laminate industry. Her painting
and creative drive were impacted in 1999, after the birth of her
first child. At that time she moved from the corporate world to
pursue her lifelong love of painting. While earlier trained in the
figurative, Julie evolved into the abstract. Influenced by life
and living, color theory and digital imagery, her work took on a
neo-cubist style and she stamped her unique technique. Her color
application is rich and the forms well defined with carving and
scratch drawing. She prefers to paint on wood panels and composite
surfaces, all of which she hand builds, joins and frames. Occasionally,
she will do a series of canvas pieces and also works on paper.
The Work
Julie’s most popular works involve a collaboration of paintings
appropriately titled, Calendar Series. They are pieced together
daily canvases. They are presented in a formal, grid-like, calendar
arrangement and depleted of all symbolism. These paintings, intended
to be seen as a group, are a journal of color and form; a daily
picture. In size, the individual paintings average approximately
5inch to 12inch squares and rectangular shapes. They depict a psychological
mood and/or events using vivid color and linear forms, a picture
for the senses.
Julie’s larger work has spanned up to 20 feet in length.
These bold paintings are a continuum of her distinctive style. She
is able to produce colorful and moving two-dimensional works in
many sizes and formats.
A native of Missouri, Julie continues to create within the artistic
community of St. Louis. You can find her work in local businesses
and homes across the USA
